No matter what industry you work in, whether that be construction, a chemical plant or even a warehouse, the environment and working conditions should be safe. In order to maintain the safety of employees, companies should implement certain practices, equipment, etc. that help to prevent accident or injury to their workers. Here are just a few ways that employers can help make a work environment conducive to everyone’s safety.

Safe Working Environment

Employers have a legal responsibility to make sure that the environment in which their employees are working is safe. This means that employees should be protected from coming in contact with hazardous or injurious materials. Also, if the work requires the use of hazardous materials or dangerous equipment, employees should be properly trained as well as protected when it comes to utilizing such materials or equipment.

Protective Gear

In 2008, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ruled that employers have a responsibility for providing protective equipment to their employees. Protective gear includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Ear Protection – This is a necessity for people who work on the tarmac at an airport to protect against the noise from the planes.
  • Foot Protection – On a construction site where heavy materials are being used, steel-toe boots are necessary to protect the feet from injury.
  • Hand Protection – Someone working as a hairstylist would need to use rubber gloves to protect their hands when performing chemical treatments.
  • Eye Protection – Goggles are worn by workers in chemical labs in order to protect the eyes against splashes from harsh chemicals. Safety glasses aren’t all created equal, so it’s important to make sure that the ones provided are designed to protect eyes from the specific hazards present and specific jobs.

Preventing Injury

As an employee, you too have a responsibility to ensure that you are remaining safe at work. One of the best ways to maintain your safety on the job is to always wear your protective gear and make sure that it is in proper working condition. For example, if you are required to wear rubber gloves, it is important that they are free of any rips or tears.

Both the employee and employer must do their part in maintaining safety at the workplace. By making sure proper safety measures are not only in place but also followed can help make for a safe work environment for everyone.
