So, You’ve Been in a Major Accident. Now What?

Most major car accidents happen without warning and can have many negative effects on people’s lives. If you’re ever involved in an accident, you may wonder what steps to take immediately following the incident. Here are some things that you should do after an auto accident.

Get an Accurate Account of the Events

Naturally, you’ll likely be in a state of panic immediately following the accident and have trouble focusing mentally. However, it’s important that you get your side of the story down to present to the officer who will arrive on the scene to take a report. Try to remember exactly what happened right before the accident. You’ll also want to remember where the other driver was on the road before the collision occurred as well as how he or she was driving. You may want to write some of these details down or record them with an audio-recording device so that you’ll remember them correctly.

Demand a Sobriety Test

If you suspect that the other driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, make sure that the officer administers a field sobriety test. During this test, the driver will be asked to do things like walk a straight line, count, or recite the alphabet to try to determine the level of impairment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also states that a field sobriety test involves standing on one leg and performing the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. In addition to field sobriety tests, officers will often administer oral drug tests to any drivers who they suspect are under the influence. The driver who was involved in the accident with you may be asked to blow into a breathalyzer to measure his or her blood alcohol content.

Present Your Evidence to the Responding Officer

When explaining your version of events to the responding officer, be sure to specify all the details in an orderly fashion. Having a dashcam in your vehicle will allow you to record the accident as it unfolds, and it’s important that you show the officer this footage if you have it. You can also ask any eyewitnesses who were present and stopped to help if they would be willing to remain at the scene and give a statement to the officer.

You’ll have a better chance at reaching a favorable resolution when you take the right steps following an auto accident. By staying organized and making sure that each important detail is addressed sufficiently, you’ll be acting in your own best interest.
